5 Bucket List-Worthy Train Trips

A bucket list: the classic list of aspirational destinations, goals, and activities. It’s never too late to start one or finish an old one. And, while you’re at it, here are some train trips that should definitely be on yours. From Southeast Asia to South America, these locomotives are luxurious and offer a convenient way to see multiple cities in one trip. You won’t miss your hotel while you’re aboard!

AUSTRALIA:

Australia has lots of train journeys to take but none quite like The Ghan. Combining the unique beauty of the outback with the splendor of a five star hotel, there is no shortage of adventure in this four day trip. Starting in Darwin and ending in Adelaide, it is all-inclusive. Every meal, glass of Champagne, and tour throughout the outback is included in the cost. You’ll know you are taken care of from the moment you arrive.

PERU:

The Andean explorer is the first luxury sleeper train in South America. They offer multiple itineraries so you can choose how you want to see the splendor of Peru. The train is outfitted with a spa on board, in addition to lots of other amenities and opportunities to relax. The stylings aboard are a mix between Peruvian culture and sleek modern design.

MALAYSIA:

This train journey through Malaysia is a classic. A three night journey through the country that begins in Singapore, there are four packages that you can choose from, all with all-inclusive service and stops throughout Malaysia. Known for its cream and green color scheme, fresh flowers and wood furnishings adorn the train to match the beauty of the passing landscape. The view of the mountains will be the first thing that greets you in the morning, and we can’t think of a better way to wake up.

JAPAN:

From the moment you step aboard,  you’ll see what makes the prefectures of Kyushu special. Designed by Japanese-craftsmen, this train requires an application and has only seven cabins, so it’s exclusive. If your application is chosen, you get to explore all seven cabins while riding the Seven Stars experience as well as what each prefecture has to offer. The stops you make along the week-long journey will give you the opportunity to soak in hot springs known as onsens, take part in pottery classes, and visit serene religious sites.

FRANCE:

The Le Grand is a smaller, more bespoke experience than most trains. With only eighteen cabins on board, it’s only a matter of time before you get to know your fellow travelers. The journey begins and ends in Paris, taking you on a tour of France you will never forget. Designed in the style of the Belle Époque period, the decor is meant to transport you back to the golden age of train travel in France. While aboard for the six-day journey, you will experience France’s mainstays, from champagne tasting to cathedral visits.

No matter which of these you chose to add to your bucket list, you are sure to go home with the memory of a once-in-a-lifetime experience!
